Wow - this is something everyone should read... I do hope that it reaches a wide audience. But how on earth (or perhaps it is beyond 'on earth'!) do we address this? As you point out, ChatGPT has very effectively 'groomed' you here and admits it.
Thank you Kate. I hope more people are informed too. I think the only way to really address it is through regulation, but in this environment, I don't think that's very likely, sadly.
Great post, Aaron. Explored this “people pleaser” mentality in a recent episode of Crazy in Love. Do you see this shifting? There seems to be a big push back against LLMs giving us what they think we want, as opposed to intellectual honesty. Or am I being wildly optimistic and naïve??!? I don’t trust anything ChatGPT tells me at the moment (or Google’s AI summaries, for that matter). That’s got to kill its business model long term hasn’t it?
Scary. Truly. Thank you for posting. I only wish more people would see this and the implications it presents, and pass it onto others. However, with the state of the world today, (except for the highly educated) most want easy answers and will feel validated without further research. I'm not usually a pessimist, but I fear for our future world. It's changing exponentially.
Thank you Leslie - let’s just hope they’re teaching critical thinking skills earlier on and including AI - sadly, gutting education funding and withholding regulation from AI aren’t particularly good indicators from the govt point of view (at least in the US).
Hey Graham, Thank you. Whatever happens, the business model will lead it. I guess one positive thing about capitalism is that someone else can develop (and already have I'm sure) LLMs that are programmed for intellectual honesty. I hear anecdotally that lots of people are leaving ChatGPT now due to a recent deal with one of Peter Thiel's companies.
